As a result of receiving a $3 million Innovation Award last summer from the State of California, HSU has been collaborating with the Humboldt County Office of Education and the Humboldt Area Foundation to establish a program that is intended to increase the number of local-area students who enroll in post-secondary education. This effort, which has been named the Local Pathways Program, is designed to build capacity in three broad categories:

  • Strengthening the pipeline of local area students who move into post-secondary education upon completion of their high school degree;
  • Eliminating financial and other barriers to a college degree;
  • Building/strengthening capacity through an investment in data sharing, and the development of a comprehensive assessment/evaluation plan for the Local Pathways initiative.

Some of the program components include expansion of the “I’ve Been Admitted to College” and the Spring Preview programs, increased transfer articulation agreements with the College of the Redwoods and other feeder community colleges, development of a ‘one-stop shop’ for scholarships awarded by community organizations, increased financial literacy programs in the local schools, and building our capacity to understand the paths local students take through their education through an investment in data sharing between local schools, CR, and HSU.

A Local Pathways Program Coordinator will be hired this semester to lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of the various program components.
